Between 2005 and 2007, Herbert also established a state-of-the-art Level 3 Motorola and Nokia-certified mobile phone and repair centre in Accra Ghana to fill the void of after sales support created by most manufacturers.

MAIN SPEAKERS
Gershom Moyo is a professional accountant and currently serves as a Senior Internal Auditor for the City of Hamilton. A native of Zimbabwe, Gershom graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 1992 with a Bachelor of Accountancy Honours. He served articles with Deloitte & Touché Chartered Accountants before joining Anglo American Corporation’s gold division, serving for six and a half years as the Finance and Administration Manager until his emigration to Canada in 2001.

Gershom is a strong believer in the following principles that have been the bedrock of his life and define who he is:

Every person is born special, endowed with unique traits and talents that define who they are. Humanity progresses, not by stifling individual contributions but by encouraging and nurturing individual endeavour and exploiting the varied talents that each one of us possesses.
There is no greater catalyst for success than a strong belief in one’s self.  Nobody understands us better than ourselves. A strong sense of belief in yourself induces unimaginable success and brings out the best in us.
The best things in life come naturally. Without downplaying the importance of hard work and discovery, it is pretty obvious that for one to be truly the best at what they do, they must exploit the natural gifts that they already possess. The talents and unique characteristics that each one of us has are a natural and unstoppable God given arsenal.
The success that Gershom has enjoyed in his professional and social life is guided by his strong belief in these three tenets.
He has served on boards of several not-for-profit organizations, using his experience, professional training and personality to enhance governance and accountability mechanisms. More importantly, Gershom has worked hard to ensure that fellow board members understand their role as being that of charting long-term strategies for success as opposed to usurping management’s day-to-day responsibilities.
He is also a Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduate from the Laurentian University in Canada and holds the designations of Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Gershom has been married to Sandra since 1989 and together they have three sons.

Michael Kirkpatrick
Michael was born in 1967 and raised in Upper Bucks County, PA USA. He began his professional career in 1987 with American Olean Tile Company while an undergraduate at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. In 1990, Michael graduated from Lehigh with a BS in Computer Science. As a programmer and systems analyst, he was responsible for the development and maintenance of various information systems including inventory, order processing, planning, stock replenishment, distribution, and transportation.

Michael met Stephanie in 1994 and soon proposed to her at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. On April 1, 1997 they were married in Las Vegas, NV USA. In 1998, Michael and Stephanie were invited to visit Uganda by a man that had launched a grassroots organization to help the orphans and rural peasants devastated by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Rakai, Uganda. The month long experience in June 1998 radically impacted their lives.

After several corporate mergers and acquisitions, Michael moved to Dallas, TX USA in 2002 to work at the corporate headquarters of Dal-Tile International. He joined the management team as a business analyst specializing in operations, supply chain issues, cost reduction strategies, and developing key performance metrics. In March 2007, after twenty years as a dedicated employee, Michael left Dal-Tile on his 40th birthday.

Since visiting Uganda in 1998, Michael and Stephanie have returned to Africa several times on their own time and with their own money. Their network of friends has grown to include artists, actors, pastors, business people, farmers, politicians, and villagers. Michael has become a passionate advocate of sustainable development and empowerment in Africa. The devolution of the continent has caused him to question western solutions of government sponsored financial aid and relief organizations. These strategies have created economic dependence and perpetuated "third-world welfare". Africa is now at the nexus of global issues that will dictate the path of human history. The orphan crisis, the destruction of societies caused by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the war on terrorism, regional conflicts, environmental issues, and the global battle for natural resources will affect every person on the planet.

Michael welcomes the opportunity to speak to your church, school, organization, or gathering to share his experiences in Africa and propose potential solutions and innovative ideas to empowering communities for the 21st century.

Heather Barkley.

In January 2010, I will travel with 11 other women from around the world to Kenya and Tanzania to climb three of Africa's highest mountains –Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Meru - in three weeks. In doing so, I will be raising awareness and funds to support families and communities in some of the poorest corners of the planet.

I am whole-heartedly committed to fundraising as much as possible to deepen the impact of this climb. My recent travels to Kenya solidified my belief that education –not only for children in developing countries, but also for Canadians- is a sustainable solution for poverty .
